Are you getting enough vitamin D? CAM Physical Therapy and Wellness Services suggests you get levels checked and consider supplementation
March 17, 2014
Amidst all the dangers and warnings you hear about too much time in the sun—which, of course, are not to be overlooked—sunlight also happens to helps provide a much-needed benefit to the body: vitamin D.
Vitamin D is an important micronutrient mainly responsible for helping the body absorb calcium and other minerals. When adequate vitamin D levels are maintained through sun exposure and other sources, this absorption of minerals leads to strong, healthy bones.
On the flip side, insufficient levels of vitamin D have been associated with a host of disorders and issues, including osteoporosis, fracture risk, diabetes, cancer, decreased immunity and increased injury risk. Sadly, many people do not receive enough vitamin D, as it’s estimated that 1 billion people worldwide have insufficient levels of vitamin D.
Older age, darker skin, being overweight and certain geographical location are some of the main factors that may affect the likelihood of vitamin D insufficiency, but every individual processes vitamins differently. Therefore, CAM Physical Therapy and Wellness Services LLC recommends patients get their vitamin D levels checked by a physician to determine with certainty whether or not they’re insufficient.
If you do happen to have vitamin D levels that are below the recommended amounts, you could be at an increased risk for both falls and injuries. By bringing vitamin D levels back to a normal range, you’ll not only improve the strength of your bones, but some studies suggest you may also:
- Build a stronger immune system
- Reduce your chance of suffering an injury
- Improve overall strength and balance
- Maintain a healthy body weight
Getting proper, safe exposure to sunlight—about 15 minutes of sun at least twice a week—will help somewhat in the process of achieving adequate vitamin D levels, but the best way to increase intake is with supplements. The dose commonly recommended by most is 600 international units daily, but some medical professionals recommend even higher doses. Before making any decisions, be sure to consult your physician for a vitamin D blood test and further recommendations on how to best supplement.
